Reiki Energy Healing

This Japanese relaxation technique works with the mind and body’s natural ability to heal itself. Reiki professionals utilize their hands to deliver energy to your body, improving the balance and flow of your energy in order to support healing.

Have you heard of Reiki but are still uncertain about what it is or if it is right for you?

Maybe a friend or doctor has suggested Reiki as a complementary form of therapy to support your mental, emotional, or physical well-being? Perhaps you have written it off altogether as “not for you.”

Full transparency: Before I tried Reiki and felt the benefits for myself, I was a bit skeptical. As someone in the healing profession, I try to remain open to the potential for all healing methods, so I decided to experience it for myself. During my time living abroad, a trusted Reiki practitioner administered my first Reiki healing experience. I was in awe of how I felt afterwards – mentally, emotionally, and physically – things started to shift and transform in all the best ways. In that moment, my passion for integrating energy healing with psychotherapeutic techniques was truly solidified.

What is Reiki?

(pronounced Ray-key), is a safe, gentle, and non-invasive form of natural, energy-based healing that is used by trained practitioners to promote stress reduction.

Inside each cell of all living things, energy is required to carry out life processes. For example, energy is needed to break down and build up molecules, as well as to transport many molecules across plasma membranes. Similarly, our energy impacts our overall well-being, our behavior, and relationships. Negative thoughts and feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, or overwhelm can create chronic stress. This disrupts the body’s hormone balance, impacts our immune system, and depletes the brain chemicals required for feelings of joy, happiness, and peace.

In turn, perhaps some of you have heard of Life Force Energy (or Chi, Qi, Prana). This energy is moving through each of us all of the time.  This energy lives both in and around the body aligning along pathways (sometimes referred to as chakras, meridians, or nadis).  When there is a disruption or blockage in the flow of life force energy, both the physical and energy body experience a state of turmoil that often leads to distress, chronic stress, and eventually to disease.


Reiki, alone or combined with psychotherapy, can provide tremendous healing benefits for your mental, emotional, physical, (and even spiritual) health. Reiki is being used in many hospitals, as well as in hospice settings all over the world. There is a growing body of research to support the benefits of its use.
